Got enough folic acid?

I've never heard of folic acid before.  I still don't really understand what it is, but I know that it's important for women trying to conceive and during pregnancy as well.  Spinach contains a lot of this vitamin thingie so I made spinach soup.

Creamy Spinach Soup

The Recipe:
2 cups milk
1 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons butter
1 small onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
1 potato
3 slices bacon, sliced
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
salt and pepper

1) Melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the onion and garlic and fry gently for 5-6 minutes. Stir in the potato and continue to cook for 1 minute and add the bacon and cook for 1 min.
2) Pour in the stock and simmer for 8-10 minutes until the potato starts to cook. Pour in the milk and bring up to a simmer, then stir in half the spinach. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes until the spinach has completely wilted down.
Pour the soup into a food processor, add the remaining spinach.  Return to the pan and reheat. Season with salt and pepper.
